The Ban-gye-ri ginkgo tree in Munmak-eup, Wonju-si, Gangwon-do was designated as a natural monument on January 31, 1964.
The exact age of the tree is unknown, but people believed to be 859-year-old.
According to folklore, this tree was planted by an ancestor of the Seongju Lee clan.
It is also thought that a white serpent resided within this tree, making it a revered tree that no one could disturb.
Additionally,
if the leaves changed to red simultaneously in the autumn, it signified a bountiful harvest for that year.
This tree, which has flourished and developed a strong,
balanced shape over the years, is regarded as the most stunning of ginkgo trees
