๐ฆข Red Crowned Crane Birdwatching๐ฆข
The red-crowned crane (Grus japonensis), also called the Manchurian crane or Japanese crane is a large East Asian crane among the rarest cranes in the world.
In some parts of its range, it is known as a symbol of luck, longevity, and fidelity. Adult red-crowned cranes are named for a patch of red bare skin on the crown, which becomes brighter during the mating season.
Overall, they are snow white in color with black on the wing secondaries, which can appear almost like a black tail when the birds are standing, but the real tail feathers are actually white. Males are black on the cheeks, throat, and neck, while females are pearly gray in these spots.
In Korea, the red-crowned crane is called Durumi or Hak and it is considered a symbol of longevity, purity, and peace. Korean Seonbis are regarded as an icon of their constancy. The red-crowned crane is depicted on the South Korean 500 won coin and is the symbol of Incheon.
Dawn in the serene plain of Cheorwon-gun County, Gangwon-do Province, often sees tens of thousands of migratory birds soar into the sky in a flock. These birds fly to Korea in October to spend winter and head back to Siberia in late February.
The land is a peace zone not only for Koreans but for birds as well. The number of birds flying to the plain in Cheorwon-gun County increased to 39,898 this year from 1,864 in 2015. The plain is as large as 150 km2 around the rivers of Imjingang and Hantangang, along with unfrozen rapids, making the county the perfect environment for these migratory birds. Rare species of cranes numbering just 3,000 in the world have also found a home in the county.
The efforts of area residents to protect the birds here make it possible for cranes to keep spending winter here. The Korean government gives subsidies to those who help protect the endangered cranes under a biodiversity management project. This collaboration between the government and county farmers has helped the cranes return every year
